Description:
Kel is slim and admittedly effeminate; he has a piquant, delicate face, with long lashes and fair, white skin. He does seem as though he should be fragile, when he is actually vengeful and quite bad-tempered. He shows little affection for anyone. Others tend to have two extreme reactions when in his presence; some become very uncomfortable, while others are allured – and some just become downright annoyed.

Though he strikes one at first as the “mysterious” type, Kel can be sarcastic, grating and so thoroughly un-mysterious that it is difficult to be around him at all. He has a sense of humor but it is as dry as parchment, and usually directed at people rather than attempting to entertain them; besides that, he has an unpredictable temper, and is easily offended, making him sharp, snappish and impatient. (Very, very rarely will he actually seek physical violence, however, unless threatened – or if a great wrong has been done to him, as he is virulently and incredibly vengeful.) He can seem wild, cold and utterly unapproachable.

Serious natured and very careful, he finds mere ignorance a slight annoyance, since it can be corrected easily, but absolutely loathes recklessness. It is because of this that he is not too fond of children or those with less-than-introspective minds. Kel is an intellectual, and though sometimes he enjoys company, he is happiest when he is alone.

His most notable trait, of course, is his pure white skin and hair. He is often mistaken for a Fel’asar or a Faery, or something of that sort, but his condition was actually brought on by a Curse.

Relationships:

Madison: Madison is/was Kel’s adopted guardian, though their real relationship is ambiguous. Hate binds them together more than love ever could.

History:
Kel’s mother was of noble birth. His father was of considerably low birth, giving the whole relationship friction from the start.
But they fell in love regardless, and in secret. His mother, Lynnara, was already engaged to a man on the same social rung as she. Her parents – both aristocratic and “purists”, so to speak – would have never approved of their relationship. It was like something out of a cheap novel.
However neither could apparently think too far ahead in their future to consider the consequences. Reed got Lynnara pregnant, and Kel was thus conceived, but not before Lynnara’s family had noticed her steadily increasing girth. Out of spite and anger they sought to punish her by having Reed arrested and executed thanks to heavy bribery.

Lynnara, understandably hurt, left the family house for good. She gave birth to her child and named him Kel; he was of ordinary coloring then, born with his mother’s blonde hair and his father’s black eyes.

Lynnara wandered with her newborn until he grew to be about six years old, sometimes homeless and sometimes brought in out of pity. She was forced to move around, avoiding her family’s attempts to find her, until at last they announced that they simply had no daughter. To make things worse, Kel began to show magical ability, and Lynnara was forced to hide his talent from Witch-hunters as well. She began to think of the child as a burden.
Lynnara had spent little to no money for the last six years. She knew that she could not have survived like this forever, as she was so thoroughly used to ‘high living’, and her mental state slowly falling into disrepair. She saved her gold for one vengeful purpose, and when she had enough, she called an assassin to murder her parents and even her only sibling.
But the assassin, named Madison, was hurt by a guard that he claimed Lynnara had not warned him about when he completed the job. He demanded more payment. Lynnara had none. Enraged, Madison simply took what she could offer and slew her.

He found Lynnara’s son then, who had started crying when his mother had hit the floor, bleeding from her neck. He would likely have finished off Kel, too, but he raised his hand with magic to defend himself; Madison, recognizing Kel’s hidden talent, realized his value and decided to raise the child in lieu of his mother.

Madison taught him only pain and fear and murder from there. He used Kel to further his own ends, forcing him to use his abilities to hamper his enemies. Kel could not refuse. If he did, Madison would only threaten to turn him over to the Witch-hunters, where Kel imagined he would receive a fate as bad, if not worse, than if he’d not left at all. He grew up like so, in a constant state of stress and mounting resentment; he never had a formal education, never learned to read or write, and is oblivious to many pieces of knowledge that others take for granted. On the flipside, his Curse magicks grew more and more potent. He threw himself into its study. It was an ugly business, but he soon grew to like it; it offered him a control over others that he simply did not have otherwise.

When he grew skilled enough Kel thought to kill Madison with a Curse few had mastered. It was Death in its most intrinsic form; a Curse that was said to grant its wielder a path straight to Hell in return for the death of their enemy. It was a risk Kel was willing to take. It proved too strong a spell for him to handle, however. Something went terribly wrong. When Kel woke, Madison had not died, but he himself had turned all white – his skin and hair, everything, except for the pitch-black of his eyes. Kel had cursed himself with the pallor of death and the burden of seeing the souls of the dead and hearing their laments.

Needless to say, this combined with the everyday stress of his sorry life brought him to the breaking point. He could no longer go outside without drawing attention to his appearance or do anything of his own free will. He spent years as Madison’s captive/ward until he was nineteen. It was then that he decided he simply did not care. He would run. Let Madison call the Witch-hunters; maybe it was a better life, living under their thumb, or dying on the execution stand. Maybe even Hell was better than this. How was he to know?

So he ran.

The first time he was caught and punished accordingly. The second time yielded the same results. The third was a stroke of luck granted from the Architect above. He thought he would never escape from Madison after the second attempt, but he was given a chance that defied all possible logic; and this time, thrice would indeed be the charm. He’d wrapped himself in a shaw and a hood and bound his arms with cloth to keep his white skin from showing, and ran, as far and as long as he could, hitch-hiking on wagons when their drivers weren’t looking, and stealing horses; anything.

Presumably after much adventuring and trial and error, Kel stumbled on Bastion Tower. He finally found sanctuary there. After recovering for a month or so, he was told he’d have to earn his keep somehow.

Now there are few professions so ill-suited to Kel’s nasty, prickly temperament as a teacher, but it was all he could find to do, so he settled for that. In reality he doesn’t even like children that much.
