He was born into a nomadic tribe, one historically displaced after the events of the Halfsun bomb. These ‘gypsies’ as they were called, famously spurred the modern advent of technology. They kept to their roots, which involved following their herds of cattle as they moved from one grazing area into the next. The tribe’s past was lived in a world of green and life, but Jericho was born into a world of grey. Without their cattle and too reluctant to abandon their homeland, the gypsies found different means of survival. They learned that outsiders found the beasts of the wastes and their body parts valuable. They made do by poaching and trading with incoming merchant and pirate ships. Some took to scavenging the ruins of Errare’s once proud civilization. Ingenuity became more important than adherence to tradition and many of the younger Gypsies bartered with traders for transport to Caedere or Sideris.
Jericho was never content. Even at a young age, he wanted more. He was convinced he was destined for greater things, an insistent belief that gave his mother intense grief. Jericho was a clever boy and often tricked the other children into doing his work and his chores for him. It was his opportunistic nature that earned him the nickname ‘Leewe’ (Wolf) among his people. He continued to bide his time and watched with interest as the outsiders and their ships disappeared into the horizon. He desperately wanted to know what lay beyond the Wailing Sea and so he dreamt and imagined and waited for his time to come.
At the age of thirteen, Jericho stowed away on a pirate ship. He was quickly found but instead of wasting time taking the boy back or throwing him overboard, the Captain decided to take him in. They needed someone to carry out the trivial tasks of cleaning and delivering messages. Besides, Jericho’s fiery and insistent nature provided the crew and the captain with endless amusement. They taught him the ways of the airship and he became proficient in engineering, navigation, and steering. He became a vulture, preying on merchant ships and wayward adventurers.
During a particularly heated argument between himself and the Captain (these grew more frequent as Jericho aged and developed a sense of entitlement and superiority), anger got the better of Jericho. He drew out his weapon as means to intimidate the Captain, but the pistol misfired. The bullet ricocheted and caught the Captain in his right eye. Scared and horrified, Jericho’s hand went lax and the weapon clattered to the floor. He thought he was going to be killed but the Captain had a different sense of justice. With the other pirates holding him down, the Captain unsheathed his knife and pressed it against Jericho’s forehead. He drew one slash over the boy’s eye to make them even. He drew a second slash to put himself ahead. Jericho was eighteen at the time. After that incident, the Captain ordered Jericho off the ship at the next port they docked at.
He eventually made his way to Caedere where he apprenticed with a local inventor. Jericho was a quick study and furthered his knowledge in technology and engineering. Though his life became steady and easy, Jericho, again, was not satisfied. He missed the adventure of piracy. He missed the sense of power that came with the knowledge you could do whatever you wanted. The occupation as an apprentice didn’t offer enough monetary gain and so Jericho took to Caedere’s underbelly. He became involved with the crime organizations there, often taking jobs of assassination and kidnapping. He did this while keeping his identity as the helpful, charismatic young apprentice intact. ‘Leewe’ became his street name, the one he was referred to by other brigands and those looking to hire.
Jericho eventually got involved with the human trafficking trade. Serving as a pied piper, he promises the young and the destitute a chance to change their lives. When they fall into his web, Jericho brings them to their ultimate fate. They either serve in brothels or serve on pirate and merchant ships that need the man power. He has an eye for the easy targets, for those whose spirits will easily break. It is the weak he preys on, like the wolf he is.
At the age of thirty-four, Jericho continues his dual life. He has one persona that lives among the normal citizens, charming his way into the laps of upper society. His other persona, perhaps his more honest face, is that of Leewe, the extortionist and criminal.
Arrogant. Self-serving. Selfish. Jericho’s philosophy on life is to do for himself and nothing for others -- unless doing for others somehow benefits himself. That said, Jericho is perfectly able to hide his selfishness and appear incredibly charming and amiable. Through his years as a con-artist, Jericho has mastered the art of manipulation. He is not above using emotions and physicality to achieve his goals.
That said, Jericho’s exploits have earned him many enemies and little friends. Betrayal comes second nature to the man, and because of his chosen profession (that of a mercenary), he sees little reason to change. Jericho’s heart, perhaps, is not fully into what he’s become and what he does – but after doing it so long, it’s second-nature. It’s what he is without completely defining who he is.
Despite his often cruel nature, Jericho is a dreamer and romantic at heart. He watches the knights and the soldiers and envies them. They are adored. They are coveted as heroes among the main populace. He wonders what that’s like, to be able to hold your head up high and feel proud about your accomplishments. He wonders, yes, but wraps himself deep inside bitterness towards society’s champions, convincing himself that he’s doing the smart thing. He’s doing what it takes to truly be successful. The world is dying and the one law is survival of the fittest, that’s the methodology he’s adopted.
His relationships are fickle and fleeting; Jericho bores of people easily and quickly. His friendship tends to last only as long as he sees benefit in keeping the bond. Though this may make him seem cold, Jericho isn’t an isolated man. He pays the Grey Wastes periodic visits to check up on his mother and offer assistance where it’s needed. He’s proud of his heritage, though his actions may make the opposite seem to be true.
His build is a sturdy one with a broad set of shoulders and a musculature built towards agility and flexibility. He wears different clothing for different purposes and is easily capable of slipping through the different levels of society unnoticed.
Jericho’s complexion is a rich caramel. His hair is a mixture of brown and grays.
